Latest Updates from Our Project:

Is there something new in this edition?
over 6 years ago – Thu, Feb 13, 2020 at 04:58:12 AM

Some of you are asking if there is something new in this edition of Blacksad: The Roleplaying Game, the first one in English.
This is a revised edition of the corebook. If you have the original edition (in Spanish), you’ll find some tweaks and minor changes here and there to make it even better, but most of the text is the same than in its original edition.
The biggest change you’ll find here is the new short cases to be solved by your detectives. If you've already played the old ones, your characters will find an entire new set of thrilling adventures between these pages instead the old ones from the original Spanish edition.

And we can get even more cases if we reach our stretch goals!

At 7,500€ - The Price of Love

We will add more stories to Blacksad: The Roleplaying Game corebook. For the first case, we will translate into English The Price of Love, a case written by Pablo Claudio Ganter y Andrea Iglesias, that originally appeared in Nivel 9 Magazine #7:

One of the characters receives an anxious phone call from an old acquaintance he didn’t hear about for a long time: Magdeleine von Vaborich Folch, a shady tigress, who arranges a meeting in a discreet place. She arrives with a sad story and a desperate need of help.

At 10,000€ - Black Leather & Red Blood

For the second case, we will translate into English Black Leather & Red Blood, a story written by Pablo Claudio Ganter, that originally appeared in Nivel 9 Magazine #11:

The newspapers talk about protests, inter-community conflicts, the breakdown of social harmony and the red danger. In spite of everything, the vegetation paints a beautiful tapestry for anyone who stops and contemplates it. There, the characters receive a call for help from a respected member of the community, the minister David Freesoul, who runs the church of a nearby guetto.

Thank you all for being part of our detectives team.

Morality
over 6 years ago – Wed, Feb 12, 2020 at 05:52:20 AM

The fight with oneself, the conflict between doing the right thing or taking the easy road is one of the main themes in noir fiction. How Blacksad: The Roleplaying Game explores this struggle?

The Conscience stats are a scale for the character’s moral integrity. Characters with high stats are very self-confident; they follow a strict moral code and act according to justice values and righteousness. They keep a clean record and are measured. They act selflessly, are able to forgive easily and even make great sacrifices for others. They avoid violence and search for solutions that benefit the rest, even if that means sacrificing their own selves. Characters with very low Conscience stats are full of doubts and remorse, tending to give in to their low instincts, they are selfish and fall into temptation. They frequently use violence as a solution, especially when they believe they are in advantage. They are also peevish and self-destructive.

During the game, the characters will see themselves exposed to moral dilemmas and temptations, having to choose between making the right choice, no matter how hard it is, or the easy road. Every decision that compromises this integrity will be a step more towards damnation, and this can cause the Conscience stats to fall making the character closer to moral ruin.

If at any moment the character reaches 0 Conscience points, the character will have become an unscrupulous creature, dishonorable, selfish, despicable and wicked. This will mark the moment when the character leaves the story from being a main character to being one more in the cast… or maybe even a villain. We will talk about this afterwards on.

Conscience Moral

9-10 Acting for the greater good, even if that means to sacrifice oneself for any other person. Resisting temptations and able to subdue any desire to the personal moral code.

7-8 Acting rightfully in most situations, even sacrificing oneself for someone who deserves it. However with only a few minor transgressions, like acting selfishly or giving into certain impulses.

5-6 Knowing the difference between right and wrong, but acting one way or another depending on the situation, frequently sacrificing oneself for loved ones.

3-4 To act according to one’s own interests knowing that they can have a negative effect on others.

1-2 Not being hesitant when breaking one’s own moral code, which is generally for selfish reasons, or when hurting someone if there’s a reason for it.

0 Looking for one’s own personal benefit above all else no matter the consequence. Hurting others for no apparent reason.

Every detective needs a crime...
over 6 years ago – Mon, Feb 10, 2020 at 04:52:45 AM

Every detective needs some mysteries to solve, so Blacksad: The Roleplaying Game corebook includes several cases so the players can get to the bottom of them:

An Indian’s Luck is a full fledged story where the characters are contacted by a gambling tycoon to investigate his mischievous partner in the management of the Lakeside Lucky casino. Soon it’s clear there’s more than meets the eye, when ideology and international politics get involved in the case.

The corebook also includes seven story hooks with all the information you need (plot, character backgrounds, possible developments…) to build up full fledged crime stories for your game table:

  • In The Crow with the Golden Fingers, a famous writer appears dead in his bathtub in Hollywood. He was working in the film adaptation of his most acclaimed novel. Officially labelled as a suicide, his colleagues disagree.
  •  Suspects in the Circus Ring features the death of a knife thrower no one gonna miss and a circus under the threat of being close down.
  • The workers of a laundry shop show up dead and the police believes The Heroes of the 27 have created a mafia. Will it be true or could you help them to clean their leader’s name?
  • In I Didn’t Kill Anyone, the husband of a rising star in local politics is killed in a crime of passion and their chauffeur is arrested. But he claims he didn’t do it.
  •  High Stakes is the case of a boxer that goes missing 48 hours before the most important match of his career.
  • In The Big Counter-Hit, a widow wanna take revenge from a local mobster, but everything goes south when another gangster discover her plans.
  •  Betrayal and Revenge is the case of a corrupt cop killed a week after being released from prison.

Iconic Characters

One of the most attractive features of Blacksad comics is its carefully developed characters. Here, nothing is black or white, everyone has a complex morality in nuanced shades of grey. From the moral ambiguity of Blacksad himself to racist chiefs of police or vengeful wives.

Blacksad: The Roleplaying Game includes the stats of the main characters from the comic book series. You will be able to meet inspector Smirnov or work with Weekly or even play them as PCs.

Every character sheet include a full-fledged background, that unveils the past (and some never shared secrets) of characters like Natalia Wilford, Alma Mayer or John Blacksad himself.

Here is a sample of some of these characters:
